Plan for the week - Week 4 (31st July - 6th August)

During this week, we aim as a group to start filming during the summer holidays when the weather is still nice as it will help to make our shots look better with the sky being blue and clear. In addition, we will aim to complete another day of filming in Leicester after researching possible locations to go where it would fit with the genre of music we are focusing on for our music video.

End of the week summary - Week 3 (19th June - 25th June)

Looking back at the week, I wasn't able to complete all 3 music video analysis and was only able to complete 1 out of the 3 music video analysis's that I wanted to complete. This means that I will have to consider completing the other 2 music analysis's at another time. As well as this, I was able to complete extra as I overlooked theories of Andrew Goodwin to have a better understanding of techniques which I needed to consider when it comes to making our music video.

Andrew Goodwin's 7 features of a music video

1.     Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2.     There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3.     There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4.     The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5.     There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6.     The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a visual style)

7.     There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

Mens Needs - The Cribs Evaluation

Mens Needs - The Cribs Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product used forms and conventions of real media products as we recreated Men's Needs by The Cribs. Within our group (me, Alfie, George, Will and Cam) we all watched the music video and were given certain time slots where we had to analyse what was happening and drew it on our storyboard. After we had completed the storyboard for the whole song we started rehearsing it in the media room with props and costumes like in the music video. After a few attempts, we started to record it. Our media product uses forms and conventions of real media products as we used as close to the real music video's props, costumes, mise en scene and characters. We went to the extent of dressing George as the women out of the video who walks around the band showing off and tries to distract the singers.

2. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We received good feedback from our recreation video as we had put in a lot of effort with the camera shots, costumes, props and characters. As well as this, we used a music video which no one else in our class had used which made our video different and unique. In addition, the music video we had chosen was a challenge for us as a group and had to consider possible problems which could have happened during the making of the music video. From this preliminary task, we had learnt a lot about camera shots and where to position certain shots. As well as this, we learnt how crucial lip synching is within a music video and if it is out of time, it looks rubbish.

Plan for the week - Week 3 (19th June - 25th June)

For week 3, I wanted to be able to complete 3 music video analysis to have a better understanding of existing music videos and what techniques they used. This would help me when it comes to me and my group making our music video.

In addition, I want to be able to complete the Men's Needs evaluation to know what we think went well and where we could possibly improve if it came to re making another music video.
